Today our main destination is Devil's Tower, a tall butte that sticks up all by itself in the middle of nowhere in the far northeast corner of Wyoming. It was formed by magma but scientists are unsure if it is the core of a volcano or from an "intrusion" that never quite reached the surface. Regardless of the origins, we could see it when we were miles away.
It is very dramatic up close.
It is composed of basalt columns (six sided rock columns). Interesting up close.
Near the base of the tower was another prairie dog town very close to the road.
After enjoying the prairie dogs we headed on off through the scenic countryside. It was much flatter here...lots of pastures for grazing.
