Yesterday we arrived fairly late to Mt. Rushmore so we decided to go back this morning to see if the light was better. This is a bright sunny day so we took more photos.
Then we headed over to the nearby Crazy Horse Monument, the world's largest mountain carving. It was started in 1948 and is still a long way from completion.
It is being funded solely by private donations and visitor's fees. Only the face is finished. We paid extra to take a ride up to the top right at the face. It is very dramatic up close.
There is controversy about the monument from the Lakota people as these mountains are sacred to them and they see the carving of statues (even one of their leaders) as a desecration of the mountains.
In the visitor's center one of the local Natives lead the silly tourists in a traditional Indian dance. Everyone had a good time.
Leaving Crazy Horse we drove through more of the beautiful mountains.

The drive took us through a very narrow tunnel carved through the rock. One way traffic only.************************************************
